If an emergency vehicles comes up behind you when driving, we know to let them through if we can. If you don’t let the vehicle through, you could be stopping the services from saving lives.
Normally, when an emergency vehicles comes up behind your car, it’s easy enough to avoid as you can simply pull over to clear a gap. However, if you’re sitting at a red light, what do you do? This is the problem that car driver Philip Lilley had when he sat waiting at a junction.
The two cars that were ahead of him had already moved into the junction and positioned themselves to give as much room as possible for the approaching emergency vehicles. Now Mr Lilley was required to make his decision, either sit there and hold up the Police van, or move into the junction slightly to give room.
With only a few seconds to make up his mind, he choose to move out and give some passing space. However, despite letting the Police van through the junction, he was forced to pay a fine and given points on his licence for jumping a red light. It could be questioned whether he really did ‘jump the lights’ because as he was only around a yard over the line and he had no intention of actually breaking the law.
The Driving Standards Agency said to Mr Lilley that rule 219 of the Highway Code is ‘motorists should consider oncoming emergency vehicles but comply with traffic signs’. However, Mr Lilley now thinks the same as I do. If motorists are going to be worried about getting points on their licence, they may not move out of the way for emergency vehicles, this may result in more lives being lost.
So you would cross a red light and receive a fine to let an emergency vehicle get through? Mr Lilley has always done so in the past, no anymore though.
